Barr Brothers Get Extended By Horns, Winds and Strings

What is so wonderful about the Barr Brothers music is that it starts out so simple.  They songs can be arranged on one guitar, a trio, and probably extended an endless array of musicians.  The first two vids are an example of single guitar solo version by Brad, the second is the Barr Brothers arrangement for 4 instruments, and the final example is one showing what their gorgeous songs can sound like with 8 musicians.

The Barr Brothers to Play David Letterman

The Barr Brothers have sent a little bit of wonderful news via email regarding their upcoming gig on the Late Show with David Letterman and subsequent tourdates as well which you'll find after the jump.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bonne année / Happy New Year to all!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our shows and picked up our album in 2011.  We feel really fortunate to have played for such inspiring audiences at just about every stop. Since we officially released our debut album in September, the response has completely exceeded any expectations we may or may not have had.  We're looking forward to heading back out on the road for many more shows and adventures.

We're starting 2012 out with some exciting news.  First, we'll be performing on Late Night with David Letterman this Thursday, January 5th at 11:35pm.  Brad and Andrew's mom, Nancy Verde Barr, was on Letterman 25 years ago, as Julia Child's assistant when she prepared a hamburger for Dave, which he ate raw because the power went off on the stove (not our mom's fault - click here to watch!).  Hopefully he'll remember.

The Barr Brothers are happy to announce the premiere airing of a project called Rendez-Vous that they embarked on back in chilly December with their wonderful friend and collaborator Marie-Pierre Arthur. This is a meeting of two musicians from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, who come together to create and perform in a spirit of sharing and exploration. Be prepared to hear Marie-Pierre Arthur's song Le Vent m'appelle par mon prénom, spun with even more magic and The Barr Brothers Cloud (for Lhasa) translated beautifully into French and interpreted by Marie-Pierre Arthur.

The Barr Brothers Mini World Tour

The Barr Brothers

From the Barr Brothers Newsletter:

"The harp is too rare in the blues and the group, very elegant, capable of beautiful velvet like rough cudgel, was already a mature bordering the insolence and had written a gaggle of more popular songs. Woodwork enthusiasts splinter and forests electrified, you are warned: you might love it."

                                                                        -Les InRocks, France

Translating a review of your show from French into English is a cute bit of gimmickry that has probably been overused, but it's still the funniest, and possibly most accurate, way to convey the live show experience. Anyone who has been "cudgeled" by a harp might agree.

We hope you've had a great holiday season filled with love, family and trophies of admiration. For our part, we have dappled the upcoming months with a handfull of performances we'd like to tell you about. First, we will be returning to the Northeast states for a few shows in some of our favorite cities. These include 2 gigs with our good friend Jocie Adams, known for her exquisite work as a member of The Low Anthem....

Following that, we'll be heading to Japan for some dates in Tokyo and a few other historic cities. This is terribly exciting for us, as it is nearly impossible to find good Takoyaki octopus dish anywhere in Montreal. We'll be announcing exactly which dates and cities soon. A trip toAustin, TX for South by Southwest in the middle of March is next, where vampires dressed as Betty Page serve you BBQ platters on Rock n' Roll buns. Again, dates and venues will be announced. And to kick off the summer season, Brad will be performing a solo show at The Louvre in Paris on June 17th, as part of a series hosted by French songstress Emily Loizeau. We plan on rounding this out with some Barr Brothers dates in France during that time frame. Stay tuned!

Interview with Brad and Andrew Barr

Brad Barr - Photo by Mike Bouchard

Jambands.com has posted a candid interview with the Barr brothers.  Members of The Slip, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, and of course the Barr Brothers.

The Barr Brothers is the most recent project from Brad and Andrew Barr of The Slip and Surprise Me Mr. Davis. On their debut self-titled release, the brothers enter new waters, exploring a stripped-down acoustic folk sound that relies heavily on poetic lyrics and beautiful melodies. Shortly before they went off to perform New Year’s shows with their other outfits, The Slip and Surprise Me Mr. Davis, they took some time to talk to jambands.com about realizing The Barr Brothers was a possibility, the new album, their ongoing musical evolution, and even a life lesson handed down from Trey Anastasio that remains with them until this day.
